Question: What communities do you serve and what can you tell us about the history of your organization?Īnswer: The Detroit Free Press primarily serves southeast Michigan, with a focus on the Detroit metro area. This “win” comes from Tyler Davis, former assistant sports editor of the Detroit Free Press, and Brian Manzullo, social, search and audience editor of the Free Press, which participated in the Major Metro Table Stakes in 2018 and the digital subscriptions sprint cohort for TS alumni in 2022. Even a Van Gogh exhibition (fabulous, by the way) turns into a melodrama.This is a series on Better News to a) showcase innovative/experimental ideas that emerge from the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative and b) share replicable tactics that benefit the news industry as a whole. My time leading the Free Press is complete, and I will look back on it with immense joy. It was my honor to clear the roadblocks out of the way and let them do their work. It is such an incredible group of professionals. I have said this to the staff on numerous occasions: If there was a measure of consistent application of talent for the benefit of our audience, the Free Press would top the list. Suffice it to say that the Freep has been this editor’s dream (with a special thanks to the paper's editors, with whom I worked most closely). Journalists from the Arizona Republic and throughout the USA TODAY NETWORK spent months traveling the length of the U.S.-Mexico border by land and air, documenting the possible impact of a wall on security, life, commerce, smuggling and property rights. Unintended consequences" won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting. We are also one of the few news organizations that produces documentary films. The Free Press is still a place where photography plays a major role. Our reporters got innocent people out of prison. Our COVID-19 coverage was in-depth, moving and again, told the truth. Our food coverage and criticism has been, and is, superb. Our auto writers are experts and know what is happening in those companies by the minute. Our higher education coverage is the best in the country. ![]() (And wouldn’t you know, the Lions are finally decent when I’m done with this job.) ![]() The writers covering what I like to call our six pro teams ― Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, Michigan and Michigan State ― are experts, on top of every development, capturing every nuance. The Free Press sports team is among the best in the country.
